Sometimes your work just feels off.
You know it could be better, but you don't know how or what to change to make it fit the vision you have in your head. And yet you want this piece to really impress this new client who has the potential to do so many more projects with you. At even higher prices in the future…
Try investing in yourself with a guided design critique.
This is an opportunity to have an experienced art director review your work and guide you on the nuanced typography, colors, fonts, layout, and marketing strategy details that will improve your design and train your eye for the future.
One set of clear feedback, rather than eight sets of contradictory, vague suggestions helpfully opined on Slack
What happens during a written critique?
You send over the finished PDF of your design.
I do some research to understand your project - the client, marketing goals, target audience, competition, brand personality, etc. so that my feedback is aligned with your design goals.
Then I comb through your design page by page, writing notes in a Google Doc about each element - what is or isn’t working, why, and some suggestions on how we can improve it.
Things such as:
- Visual hierarchy
- Leading the eye
- Spacing and visual grouping
- Font and color psychology / choices
- Alignment
- Branding and consistency

My approach is friendly, light, casual, and down-to-earth.
I won’t beat around the bush, but I won’t be harsh either.

I want to teach you everything that I can that will help you understand design better, while giving you the space to incorporate revisions in the way that best suits your personality and style. I won’t force you into a single approach - I’ll point out a design problem and suggest a few ways to fix it. The method you choose, or finding another solution altogether, is up to you.
Who am I?
Hey, I’m Deena Englard :)
I’ve been working as a Designer and Art Director at marketing agencies for 10 years, designing everything from logos to fundraising campaigns to dinners, ad series', websites, newsletters, high-end brochures, social posts, emails, and even creating marketing strategies.
You might recognize some of these clients I've worked with: Dirshu, LRBC, Rockland Chesed Network, YTCTE, Yeshiva of South Shore, Chesed Chicago, Torah Umesorah, United Refuah Healthshare, Upward Chicago, the OU's Gen Aleph, JYN, Chabad.org, Chabad on Campus, and Chabad of the Conejo.
I’m also a mentor in Michal Eisik’s Profitable Freelancer course and run Frocks in Stock, a blog with 75+ articles on improving your design skills to think like a Senior Designer.
I’ve seen over the years the leaps in skill, confidence, and professional growth that can take place for a designer over time with the right guided feedback.
Most of the designers I work with are in that “in-between” stage - you’ve got skills and some experience, but you know you could be doing more.
Critique (or coaching) is a great way to spot the nuances of design that you could improve in, gain actionable practice, and move forward faster than you ever would alone.
